Juan de la Rica (b. 1979) is a Spanish painter based in Bilbao. He received his BFA from the University of the Basque Country in 2007. Since then, he has exhibited his work in many national and international solo and group shows.

The themes of my paintings are varied, such as still lives, portraits, mythological scenes... I usually approach on these topics from irony and humor, and I like to suggest open narratives, so that the viewer makes his own movie. I also like people to get very close to the painting and look at the paint itself. I like to paint with flat and saturated colors, and with synthetic and clean lines. In this way, my work can remind the aesthetics of comics and Pop Art.

Painting means to me constant adventure and improvisation, which contrasts with the previous planning of the image, where I try to make the composition and each element well defined before facing the canvas. That is why documentation and sketches are very important in my creative process.

As a figurative painter, the search for the subject matter is essential and, at the same time, paradoxically, it is nothing more than a plot excuse for the paint itself to manifest, advance and develop, in the most free and autonomous way, always respecting everything that is ungovernable in it.
